The CIBER-BBN is one of the new CIBER consortia in Spain, established under the leadership of Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII) to encourage quality research and create a critical mass of researchers in the field of Biomedicine and Healthcare Sciences. The CIBER-BBN was officially founded with the meeting of its Executive Council on December 4, 2006, and its headquarters are in Zaragoza.

The scientific areas represented within the CIBER-BBN are: Bioengineering and biomedical imaging, Biomaterials and tissue engineering and Nanomedicine, and the Center’s research is focused on the development of prevention, diagnostic and follow-up systems and on technologies related to specific therapies such as Regenerative Medicine and Nanotherapies.

The overall objectives proposed in the CIBER-BBN scientific plan include the increase of research capacities of the member groups by means of sharing resources and coordinating and encouraging synergies. Greater and better use of advanced technologies in the National Healthcare System will be promoted, such that it progressively becomes the national reference for these technologies. At the same time the Spanish presence will be increased in decision-making forums and international research networks in this field. All in all, the proposal is to improve the technological level of national industry in this sector and favor the creation of specialists with a high level of training in healthcare technologies.
